It’s Called Development

Amy’s entire existence is wrapped up in being the executive director of her family’s charitable foundation. She uses her position and power to get what she wants. Ms. Teufel has summoned to her to the offices of her corporation to discuss giving the foundation a large sum of money. While she’s waiting for Ms. Teufel, Amy is kept company by Kasparina, Ms. Teufel’s assistant. But something’s not quite right- there aren’t any other employees around, the office is dark, hot, and smoky, there’s nothing to drink. Ms. Teufel finally arrives, and makes Amy an offer- she’ll give the foundation a huge sum of money, if Amy will give up her control. What Amy doesn’t know is that it’s all a test—Ms. Teufel is the devil and Kasparina is her henchwoman. Amy takes the bait, sells her soul and is dragged off to hell by Kasparina.

A workshop of the play was directed by Cindy Ohanian for the Looking Glass Theatre Lab in December 2001. The one-act version received a non-Equity production at the Newgate Theatre, Providence RI, directed by James P. Robinson in 2004.
